RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of British forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among numerous UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
